    Pump Connectors: What Are They and Why Are They Important?

    Pump connectors are an important component in many mechanical and building services systems, particularly where pumps, chillers and other reciprocating machinery are connected to pipework. Their primary purpose is to help isolate vibration and reduce the transmission of noise through the connected pipework.

    Without suitable vibration isolation, mechanical movement from pumps can be transferred into the surrounding pipework and equipment. Over time, this can contribute to noise, stress and premature wear of components such as pump seals and bearings.

    What Are Pump Connectors?

    Pump connectors are flexible components installed between a pump or other mechanical equipment and the associated pipework. They provide a degree of flexibility at the connection while helping to isolate mechanical vibration.

    Stainless steel pump connectors commonly consist of a corrugated stainless steel hose combined with a stainless steel braid and suitable end connections. Different connection types are available depending on the requirements of the installation, including screwed and flanged connections.

    Pump connectors can also be supplied in different lengths and configurations to suit specific installation requirements.

    Where Are Pump Connectors Used?

    Pump connectors are commonly found in heating, cooling and mechanical services installations. Typical applications include:

    • Heating and hot water systems
    • Chilled water systems
    • Pumps and pumping equipment
    • Chillers
    • Reciprocating machinery
    • HVAC systems
    • Commercial and industrial pipework

    They are particularly useful where rotating or reciprocating equipment could otherwise transmit vibration into rigid pipework.

    How Do Pump Connectors Reduce Vibration?

    Pumps generate mechanical vibration during operation. If the pump is connected directly to rigid pipework, some of this vibration can travel through the piping system.

    A flexible pump connector provides an isolating element between the equipment and pipework. This helps reduce the transfer of vibration and associated noise.

    Controlling vibration can also help protect connected equipment. Excessive vibration may place additional stress on components and connections, potentially contributing to leaks, bearing wear and other maintenance problems.

    The connector needs to be correctly selected and installed for the system to achieve the intended performance.

    Stainless Steel Pump Connectors

    Stainless steel pump connectors are commonly used where greater temperature resistance, durability or specific material requirements are needed.

    A typical stainless steel connector incorporates a corrugated stainless steel hose and protective stainless steel braid. Different grades and end fittings can be selected depending on the application.

    They can be suitable for applications involving hot and cold water, chilled water and, where the product specification permits, steam and other services.

    Some stainless steel pump connectors are also available with Water Regulations Approval Scheme (WRAS) approval for suitable potable and wholesome water applications.

    Pump Connectors Are Not Expansion Joints

    One important distinction is that pump connectors should not be confused with pipework expansion joints.

    Although they can look similar, they perform different functions. Pump connectors are primarily intended to isolate vibration from pumps and other machinery. Stainless steel braided hose connectors are not designed to compress or extend to accommodate thermal expansion in pipework.

    Where a pipework system needs to accommodate thermal movement, an appropriate expansion joint should be selected instead.

    Correct Installation Is Important

    Correct installation is essential for pump connectors to operate safely and effectively. Pipework should be properly supported, anchored and guided according to the manufacturer’s installation requirements.

    This is particularly important because flexible hoses and pump connectors can exert pressure thrust when the system is pressurised. Suitable anchors and fixed points help protect the surrounding pipework and equipment.

    The connector should also be installed at the correct length and without unnecessary twisting, bending or misalignment. Following the relevant fitting instructions helps ensure that the connector is operating within its intended parameters.

    Choosing the Right Pump Connector

    Selecting a pump connector depends on several factors, including pipe size, connection type, operating temperature, working pressure, system fluid and the equipment being connected.

    The required movement, available installation space and whether the application involves potable water or another regulated service may also affect the choice.

    For more demanding applications, stainless steel connectors can provide an alternative to rubber bellows where temperature or service requirements exceed the limitations of rubber products.

    Supporting Reliable Pipework Systems

    Pump connectors form an important part of vibration control in mechanical pipework systems. By providing a flexible connection between equipment and pipework, they can help reduce the transmission of vibration and noise while supporting the long-term performance of connected components.

    Correct product selection, appropriate pipework support and careful installation are all essential to achieving the best results from a pump connector.
